Vale – Douglas “Dougie” Styles

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of VRA Rescue NSW – Cessnock/Kurri Kurri Life Member, Douglas “Dougie” Styles, a man whose life was defined by service, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Doug joined the Cessnock District Rescue Squad in 1987 and quickly became a respected and valued member of the organisation. Over the years, he served in a number of leadership roles, including Deputy Captain, and held the position of President for many years. Through his leadership, guidance, and steady presence, Doug helped shape the squad and support countless volunteers.

Doug was no stranger to difficult and demanding situations. He played an active role in rescue operations following the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake, assisting communities during one of the region’s darkest times. He also responded to numerous major flood and bushfire events throughout his years of service, always willing to step forward when people needed help most.

His passion for helping others extended far beyond the rescue squad. Doug was deeply involved with Mines Rescue and dedicated an incredible 45 years of service to St John Ambulance NSW. In recognition of his outstanding commitment and service, Doug was admitted as a Member of the Order of St John (MStJ), a prestigious honour reflecting his dedication to helping others. Through these organisations, he touched countless lives and contributed significantly to the safety and wellbeing of his community.

Many will remember Doug not only for his service, but also for his reputation as a meticulous and thorough first aid instructor. He had a genuine love of teaching and took great pride in passing on his knowledge and experience to others. His patience, attention to detail, and commitment to high standards ensured that generations of first aiders and emergency responders were better prepared because of his guidance.

Doug’s legacy is one of selfless service, leadership, and education. He devoted much of his life to protecting others, sharing his knowledge, and strengthening the organisations and communities he served. His contributions cannot be measured solely by the positions he held or the incidents he attended, but by the countless people he helped, mentored, and inspired along the way.

Doug will be remembered as a dedicated rescuer, a respected leader, a gifted instructor, and above all, a man who cared deeply for others.

His service leaves a lasting legacy, and his memory will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.

Rest peacefully, Doug. Your work is done, but your impact will never be forgotten.

Details for funeral service will be announced at a later date.

Current and former VRA members are invited to attend and participate in a Guard of Honour to celebrate Doug’s service.
