The Cessnock District Rescue Squad was called to a concrete storm water drain at 5.40 pm Sunday 19th to assist Paramedics after a teenager had fallen from a walkway. The teenage male was walking across the overpass when for some reason he has fallen over the railing and approximately six metres to the concrete drain floor. Upon arrival of Paramedics it was quickly realised that Rescue personnel would be required to assist with lifting the patient out of the drain. Paramedics treated the teenager for limb fractures and possible spinal and internal injuries whilst Rescue personnel set up the equipment required for the extrication. Once stabilised the patient was placed onto a spine board and then into a “stokes litter”, he was then lifted out of the drain using ropes and muscle power. He was loaded into the Ambulance and transported to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition. The incident occurred near the very busy intersection of Wollombi and Allandale Roads and drew a large crowd of onlookers; however disruptions to traffic flow were minimal.
