Power pole snapped by out of control vehicle

The Cessnock District Rescue Squad was called to a single vehicle accident at 10.40pm Friday 24th. The accident occurred near the intersection of Aberdare and Allworth Streets Kurri Kurri and caused extensive damage to power lines. The middle aged male driver and sole occupant of the vehicle lost control, careered of the road and collided with a tree and a power pole. Both the tree and power pole were sheared off at ground level with the power pole coming to rest on the vehicle. The male driver got out and walked away suffering only apparent minor injuries and was taken by Police to Kurri Kurri Hospital for further precautionary assessment. If the impact had been half a metre further back it would have hit the driver’s door and not the front wheel arch, with a very real possibility of a much worse outcome for the driver. The damaged pole and low hanging power lines resulted in a potentially dangerous situation with Rescue personnel illuminating the scene and Fire Officers standing by with “charged hoses” to maintain a safe area. Ausgrid personnel were responded to the scene and upon securing the pole a tow truck winched the vehicle clear of the damaged pole. The pole was then replaced and the power lines repaired, with diversions in place for all traffic on Aberdare Street between Alexandra and Allworth streets throughout the incident. The repairs were completed and normal traffic arrangements back in place by 6am.

“I would again like to remind all local businesses of the Business Sponsorship scheme in which your business receives quarterly advertising in The Advertiser. Apart from all other benefits, Pedens Hotel, a proud Business Sponsor has offered $100 vouchers as an incentive for more businesses to come on board” Mr Sattler said. “One business has recently thrown its support behind the squad and received a voucher and there are nine more up for grabs” Mr Sattler added.
