The Cessnock District Rescue Squad was called to a Brunkerville property at 5pm Sunday 13st May to search for a missing person. Emergency services were called to the remote location following reports an elderly lady had become separated from a group walking along a trail. Police co-ordinated the search which encompassed a large and rugged area of bushland, with fears the cold overnight temperature could have serious consequences for the elderly women.
Police and Rescue personnel were assisted by a Police K9 unit and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with the women found at around 10.30pm. Rescue personnel treated the women for mild hypothermia and dehydration until Paramedics arrived to transport her to hospital for further assessment.
“Thankfully the woman was found reasonably quickly and despite the rugged terrain and cold temperature she appears to have suffered no serious injuries, it was a very good outcome” a Rescue Squad spokesman said.
Squad personnel also attended the Kurri Kurri District Hospital on Monday 14th to remove a ring from a ladies swollen finger.
Despite the cold weather squad personnel have responded to a number of snake calls throughout the district recently. All residents are reminded to remain vigilant, even though snakes are much less prevalent in the cooler weather. If you see a snake do not attempt to catch or kill it, call 49912444 ASAP and if safe to do so monitor the snake’s movements as this greatly increases the changes of a successful capture.
